Andy Robertson gives Dominik Szoboszlai verdict

Andy Robertson has given his verdict on Dominik Szoboszlai's error that led to a goal from Barnsley suring Liverpool's FA Cup win.

The Reds beat Barnsley 4-1 on Monday nght, but Szoboszlai gifted the visitors a goal at Anfield after an attempted backheel in his own six-yard box fell to Adam Phillips who got the League One club on the score sheet.

Robertson has revealed that Szoboszlai apologised to his teammates during the half-time break.

Klopp 'a candidate for the Real Madrid job'

Jurgen Klopp is a candidate for the Real Madrid job in summer.

That's according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who is reporting that not only would Klopp be a candidate for the job, but the German would seriously consider taking the role.

Klopp is currently the head of global soccer for Red Bull.

Konate 'yet to agree to a deal'

Contract negotiations between Ibrahima Konate and Liverpool are yet to see a breakthrough.

That's according to The Athletic, who are reporting that the defender is yet to agree to a deal that would keep him on Merseyside beyond the end of the season.

The report goes on to claim that the Reds are also focused on signing a new centre back during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Robertson reveals Szoboszlai Liverpool dressing room apology

Andy Robertson has revealed Dominik Szoboszlai apologised to his Liverpool team-mates after his "unacceptable" error drew criticism following the 4-1 FA Cup win over Barnsley. Szoboszlai's stunning strike - the 100th goal of his career - gave Arne Slot's side the lead against the Tykes before Jeremie Frimpong struck to double the advantage at Anfield.

However, the Hungary captain was guilty of over-playing later in the half, attempting a back-heel inside his own penalty area that he got wrong, which allowed Reds fan and former academy prospect Adam Phillips the simple chance to score at the Kop end.

That goal gave Barnsley renewed belief after the break before late strikes from substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike sealed Liverpool passage's through to the fourth round, where they will host Brighton & Hove Albion.

Szoboszlai was branded "disrespectful" for his showboating by visiting boss Conor Hourihane while Slot also explained how he would speak to his No.8 about the issue.

And Robertson said: “I think we all said something at the time, but he realised and apologised at half-time. If anyone's performances can’t get criticised this season, it’s Dom’s."

Alonso breaks silence

Xabi Alonso has spoken for the first time since being sacked by Real Madrid.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: “This professional stage is over, and it didn't go as we would have liked. Coaching Real Madrid has been an honor and a responsibility.

“I thank the club, the players and above all the fans and Madrid fans for their trust and support. I leave with respect, gratitude, and pride that I did my best.”

Szoboszlai apology

Dominik Szoboszlai has apologised after his bizarre error in Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Barnsley.

The Reds might have run out 4-1 winners at Anfield, but towards the end of the first-half, Szoboszlai chased back to stop a Barnsley attack and then tried a flick just three yards out when under pressure that presented Adam Phillips with the simplest of tap-ins.

Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane didn’t hold back in his post-match press conference as he delivered a scathing assessment in which he claimed Szoboszlai was "disrespectful" to his team, while an unimpressed Arne Slot confirmed he would be holding talks with his midfielder.

But to his credit, Szoboszlai issued an apology, saying: "[I'm also] sorry for the team again [for his error leading to Barnsley's goal]. I made it hard for us with an easy mistake, I would say. But football moves on and we take the next round."

Juventus 'want to sign Chiesa on loan'

A report from Italy claimed earlier this week that Juventus will soon make a formal offer for Federico Chiesa.

TuttoSport, via Sport Witness, reported that Juve were initially offering a loan and an option to buy; they’re now putting forward an obligation to buy in their bid.

The report went on to claim that the obligation would be based on certain conditions being met between now and the end of the season.

However, The Athletic is now reporting that Juventus want to sign Chiesa on loan, but Liverpool are highly unlikely to sanction a temporary move for the Italian forward this month.

Kylian Mbappe sends farewell message to Xabi Alonso

Kylian Mbappe wasted little time in sending a farewell message to Xabi Alonso after he departed Real Madrid by mutual consent.

Alonso had come under increasing pressure towards the end of last year, and the Spanish giants announced their decision less than 24 hours after their Spanish Super Cup defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in Saudi Arabia.

Sharing a photo of the pair embracing, Mbappe wrote: “It’s been short but it was a pleasure to play for you and learn from you. Thank you for giving me the confidence since Day 1.

“I will remember you as a manager who had clear ideas and knows many things about football. Best of luck for your next chapter.”

Alonso's tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu has been marred by clashes with several key players, including Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Endrick.

He was also involved in an embarrassing moment with Mbappe following the defeat to Bara on Sunday night when the forward appeared to undermine the 44-year-old.

Alonso appeared to want his players to give Barcelona a guard of honour during their trophy presentation, but no Madrid player followed him, and Mbappe seemingly waved the Spaniard away.

The BBC is also reporting that Alonso argued with Mbappe about tactics before Sunday's final, and he also had a disagreement with president Florentino Perez on Monday before the decision to part ways was taken later in the day.

Alonso has been replaced by former Liverpool team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa, who joined Real as youth team coach in 2020 and was appointed in charge of their second team, Castilla, in June last year.

Guehi 'stance' on January transfer

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Marc Guehi continues to prefer to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season rather than depart this month.

A £35million move to Anfield collapsed on deadline day when Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour after failing to secure a replacement.

The Reds remain interested in the England international, but as reported by the ECHO last week, they are concentrating their efforts on persuading the player to move when his deal expires at the end of the season.

And Romano has claimed: “I can tell you on Marc Guehi, the intention of the player has always been moving in the summer on a free transfer, with Liverpool really pushing and Arsenal calling because Arteta is a big fan. Bayern [Munich] have also had some meetings for Guehi, but now [Dayot] Upamecano is expected to sign a new contract.

“Manchester City can be clear. They want Guehi, they want to make an important proposal and want to go strong in this January window and will try next week.

"If the player decides to accept, Man City are prepared to make an agreement with Crystal Palace. They don't see any problems with that, but it's on the player, and his plan has always been to move in the summer. So let's see what happens, but Marc Guehi story remains absolutely alive.”

Barnsley boss hits out at 'disrespectful' Szoboszlai

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane has accused Dominik Szoboszlai of a lack of respect after the bizarre goal that gifted the League One side the chance of an FA Cup shock against Liverpool. The Reds were cruising shortly before half-time in their third round clash at Anfield on Monday evening through goals by Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong.

But Szoboszlai was then guilty of a horror error shortly before half-time when he mishit a bizarre attempted backheel inside his own six-yard box towards goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili that allowed former Reds striker Adam Phillips to nip in and score.

And Hourihane was less than impressed with the actions of the Liverpool midfielder.

“First and foremost it’s such an amazing feeling for Adam to score in front of the Kop,” said the Barnsley boss. “He is a Liverpool fan and came up through the Academy here and had an outstanding game."
