Man United will prioritise a move to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that Ruben Amorim has already made up his mind on what he needs.

While coming games will give the boss more time to assess his squad, Brown has insisted it has become clear that a new centre-forward will be targeted.

Marcus Rashford started through the middle in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, while Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench after 68 minutes.

However, none of the three forwards are said to have left Amorim particularly impressed amid lingering questions over their ability.

As a result, United’s scouts have turned their attentions to landing a new forward who is better-suited to the manager’s style to help spearhead their fight back.

Brown told Football Insider earlier this month that United are “definitely” interested in signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres to reunite with his former boss.

United are currently 12th in the Premier League with just four wins in their opening 12 games, but feel the signing of a new forward could provide a turning point.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also spent time with the likes of Tottenham, Blackburn, and Aston Villa, insisted that signing a new forward has risen to the top of the club’s list of priorities.

“It’s very much considered a weakness in the team,” he told Football Insider.

“I know there have been questions about whether the strikers, Hojlund or Zirkzee, are up to it.

“Every time they come on, they look like a couple of trialists, not starting strikers for Man United.

“Marcus Rashford, you never know what you’re getting with him. There’s no doubt he’s got the ability to lead the line, but whether he’s got the enthusiasm for it, I don’t know.

“But that’s a part of the team that needs remedying and it’s an area they want to recruit in.

“Everything you do revolves around your front man, so that is going to be their priority.

“Amorim has already identified that as one of the weaknesses in this United team and that became clear in the game against Ipswich and will be addressed in January.“
