The Gunners were left shocked when long-time director Edu called it quits last year to join Evangelos Marinakis' budding footballing empire, which includes Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

Edu's former right-hand man Jason Ayto had been taking charge of the Brazilian's duty in the interim, but Arsenal have finally managed to secure a permanent replacement.

On Monday, the North London giants reached an agreement with former Atletico Madrid recruitment chief Andrea Berta, who has been hailed as being among the top three sporting directors in world football.

One of the points of friction that eventually influenced Edu's departure was the ever-increasing influence of manager Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard has been involved in the appointment of Berta, but it is clear that the Italian won't just be a 'yes-man.'

Berta plots record-breaking window

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Berta is determined to make a splash in his first window. The transfer guru, it is claimed, wants to reshape the spine of Arteta's team.

Arsenal are in a fairly secure financial position, so there is a feeling that they could spend as much as €350 million to €360m on new recruits, although this estimate appears to be on the higher end of the spectrum and would, in part, have to be financed by outgoings.

Jacobs reports that Berta could look to make up to seven signings this summer. He is keen to add a new second-choice goalkeeper with Joan Garcia as the top option. Additionally, a left-back signing is on the agenda, with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney on the way out.

In midfield, the priority is to sign a defensive-minded player. Talks with Martin Zubimendi have been ongoing for a while and Arsenal are confident of snapping up the Euro 2024 winner.

However, Berta could also look to another midfielder, who would be more of an all-rounder. Intriguingly, Jacobs reports that the Italian has put forward the name of Bruno Guimaraes as someone to target alongside Zubimendi. The Brazilian has a release clause worth around €120m.

Further forward, the idea is to add a left-winger, a striker and potentially a backup for Bukayo Saka on the right. Nico Williams and Benjamin Sesko are two realistic targets for the two former positions.

There is also the well-known admiration for the seemingly unattainable Alexander Isak, while it is also reported that Matheus Cunha could be an option. It is thought that he would be keen on the move to the Emirates despite recently extending his Wolves contract.
