‘He’s not going to get rid of those traits’ - Roy Keane reopens his attack on Bruno Fernandes as he questions Ruben Amorim

Roy Keane has given his another withering verdict on Bruno Fernandes, as he questioned the leadership qualities of the Manchester United captain once again.

Keane has been highly critical of the decision to hand Fernandes the captain’s armband at United, with his comments following last Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham sparking a fresh wave of criticism for the Portuguese international.

Fernandes said he was “upset” referee Chris Kavanagh did not apologise for bumping into him ahead of his penalty during the game at Craven Cottage.

The Portugal midfielder said on Sky Sports: “I was upset. Obviously, as every penalty taker, you have your own routines.

“You have your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise, and that was what triggered me in that moment.

“But that’s not an excuse to missing the penalty. I just had a very bad hit on the ball. I got my foot too (much) under the ball, and that’s why the ball went over the bar.”

Keane was not working on Sky Sports last weekend when the incident occurred and speaking prior to United’s shock Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby on Wednesday night, the former United captain didn’t hold back as he suggested, once again, that Fernandes is not the right man to be leading United.

“I’ve been critical of him over the last year or so, but he’s not going to change now. What age is he now? He’s not going to get rid of those traits. We see too much of that,” Keane told the latest edition of The Overlap.

"Even against Arsenal in the first game of the season, he gives the ball away with a little ball in the box and it leads to the goal. Little details and you are looking at Bruno’s leadership skills.

"Don’t let it upset you going into the second half. I’ve heard stuff… if Bruno is upset with something in training, he carries it on for the week.

"People might think I was a narky git, but if something happened, you move on pretty quickly enough. You wouldn’t let it affect your performance. His technical stuff, I’ve said, he’s brilliant. But all these little traits. If he is your captain, one of your leaders, these are not good traits.”

Keane went on to question the lack of impact Ruben Amorim has had since taking over as United manager last November and suggested he may have had as big an impact if he took over at Old Trafford.

"The signs aren’t good and the results will tell you that,” he stated. “You talk about a manager walking in the door and whatever philosophy they have about the football club.

"Thomas Frank is an example [won his first two Premier League matches at Tottenham] is an example and I know it’s early days, but he can have an effect by his personality, his tone, the way he speaks to people. You get a bunch of people who want to follow you and a few will fall by the wayside.

"I’m convinced if I went in there, that I’d get that response from players. You don’t see it with this group. Bill Shankly said years ago, you want players to turn up every week. Not with this group, it’s hit and miss.

"He’s got to find a way to win. If you are winning football matches, you have a chance to build a project, but some of his decision making is a bit strange. Chopping and changing his full-backs.

"Their stats last year was really bad. The home record was shocking.”
