Ten-man Arsenal launched resolute defensive tactics in order to hold onto their 2-1 lead but to no avail, with Silva taunting the London side afterwards when speaking on their game plan and rivalry.

“The difference [between City’s rivalry with Arsenal and with Liverpool]? I don’t know," he said.

"Maybe that Liverpool have already won a Premier League, Arsenal haven’t. That Liverpool have won a Champions League, Arsenal haven’t.

“Liverpool always faced us face-to-face to try to win the games, so by this perspective the games against Arsenal haven’t been like the ones we had and have against Liverpool. So yes, maybe a different rivalry.”

Silva also appeared to remind Arsenal of their lack of major trophies by gesturing a zero with his hand to defender Gabriel.

However, Gunners super fan and broadcaster Morgan has rejected the City man's comments and defended his side's performance.

"What a load of absolute baloney," he said in response on talkSPORT Breakfast. "When we were 11 v 11, let me remind him, we were absolutely battering them.

"It should have been three if Gabriel scored a brilliant header but he missed an easier one a few minutes earlier, we were all over them like a rash! And by the way, why did City still have 11 players?

"Why did Haaland, who tried to decapitate Gabriel with the ball, right, who was running over players... Why did Walker, who in the goal video, Walker's put on Gabriel, does a terrible job thankfully, but he's poking him like he's got a cattle prod, where are the red cards and yellow cards for these miscreants?

"The truth is, one rule for City at the Etihad, one rule for everybody else and despite that once again abusing the rules, we managed to come within 90 seconds or so of what would have been the greatest win of Arteta's managerial career."

Host Jeff Stelling then read out a text from City fan Richard, who said: "Piers is an insufferable pantomime villain with not one element of objectivity. A relegation-threatened team would not play like that."

However, Morgan brushed it aside and replied: "Rattled. They've lost that confident swagger, they are rattled.

"The most confident thing coming out of Manchester right now is Oasis, not their football team."
