Turkish press term 'giant' Andre Onana 'man of destiny' after latest Trabzonspor marquee game

Senne Lammens might have got off to a dream start at Manchester United, but Andre Onana is also showing signs of life away from Old Trafford, with his latest performance being a marquee one.

It was always expected that Andre Onana would do better elsewhere than he was at Man Utd.

Partly because the bar was so low that it was easy to clear, but also because he had clearly been trapped in a vicious cycle of low confidence and poor form.

After a dream debut for Trabzonspor, Onana has kept doing well, with the odd blip, but the statement performance of his small tenure so far arrived recently at the biggest stage.

Andre Onana stands out for Trabzonspor vs Galatasaray

Facing Galatasaray away from home is the toughest fixture in Turkish football because they have been a ruthless winning machine for more than a year now.

Andre Onana faced the most challenging test of his Trabzonspor career in that cauldron, and he came away at the end with his reputation enhanced.

Onana finished the game as the Player of the Match, as per FotMob, rated the highest among all players on the pitch with a rating of 8.2.

The goalkeeper made five saves to keep a clean sheet, three of which were from high-quality shots inside the box.

He showed his ball-playing skills by completing ten long balls, and finished with a total of 16 passes in a game where the home team dominated possession.

Onana has been a favourite of the Turkish press since his debut, and this marquee performance was enough to send them into overdrive.

Turkish press in awe of Onana

For a player who was vilified constantly in England, Onana must be feeling recharged with a change of scenery and by reading positive coverage about him in newspapers.

Turkish outlet TrabzonX called him a “Man of destiny”, crediting Onana for his leadership skills in keeping the team alive in a “storm”.

Haber TS said Onana became a “giant” in the derby against Galatasaray, adding that he “gave life” to Trabzonspor with his inspired display.

ASpor said Onana was the “real No. 1”, declaring that he has already become one of the most important players of the season, not just for Trabzonspor, but in Turkey as a whole.

Haberler acted in pure disbelief over the Cameroonian’s performance, running a headline titled, “What are you, Onana?”, adding that the turnaround from being one of the most criticised players at Old Trafford to his form in Turkey is remarkable.

NTVSpor gave the Galatasaray perspective, saying that the defending champions had come up against “a very big opponent” in Onana, who they could not get past.

All of the praise above will sound alien to Man Utd fans, who approached every game with Onana in goal with a feeling of dread.

But if he keeps impressing and earns himself a permanent move, then nobody will be happier than Utd.
