Andy Robertson has opened up on how much he is enjoying Liverpool life under Arne Slot after a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night took them back to the top of the revamped table. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo were enough on a night that saw both Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe miss penalties.

And the victory, which was the Reds' fifth in succession in this season's competition, means they are now guaranteed a play-off spot in the top eight.

Robertson has been rotated regularly with Kostas Tsimikas this term but is in line to feature against Manchester City on Sunday and the Scotland captain has explained what Slot wants from his full-backs in a chat with CBS.

Robertson, who gave the spot-kick that Mbappe missed, said: "It's not too bad, it's been good so far. Obviously today was a big game and the lads who've been here for a while haven't managed to get one over on Real Madrid, so it was nice to finally be on the right side of the result.

"Was it a penalty [for Real Madrid]? Look, there wasn't much contact but look I think I've left my leg in a little bit there and if there is contact then the ref gives it and he's not going to overturn it. So I think it's soft, I was a bit frustrated but look it is what it is. I think Caoimh (Caoimhin Kelleher) was getting bored, so I gave him something to do and thankfully he stepped up.

"It's been a lot different, we're deeper and sometimes he wants you to overlap, sometimes he wants you to underlap and sometimes he wants you to make deep runs like you saw Conor (Bradley) do tonight, so every game is different and everyone is enjoying it. If I focus on myself or the full-back role, we have to do something different every game, so I am really enjoying it.

"Being 30 years old and experiencing it, it's been a joy to kind of learn something new again and I have really enjoyed it. Look it will take time but I think the results have been really good, we've performed really well and we will only get better.

"But like I say, everything changes game to game, the staff, the hours the analysts put in, that makes us the best prepared possible for every game."

Robertson also jokingly informed Jamie Carragher that he has been "getting a bit of stick" in the Liverpool dressing room over claims Mohamed Salah was 'selfish' with comments over his contract situation last week.

Salah spoke to just a handful of publications, that included the ECHO, on Sunday after scoring twice in the 3-2 victory at Southampton and revealed in the rare interview that he has yet to be tabled a formal offer by the club.

The Egyptian is out of contract next summer and can speak to clubs outside of England about a pre-contract agreement when the transfer window opens in January. Despite the need to resolve the issue, Carragher criticised Salah's decision to go public over the lack of a breakthrough ahead of a major week for Arne Slot's side that included the Champions League visit from Madrid before Sunday's huge game with Manchester City at Anfield.

Speaking after beating Madrid 2-0 on the night, in a post-match chat with CBS - which features Reds legend Carragher as one of the four-person panel - Robertson said the squad took a dim view of the stance from the 2005 Champions League winner in what was a light-hearted exchange.

"He's been getting a bit of stick in the changing room this week, that is for sure!" Robertson told presenter Kate Abdo as Carragher laughed alongside his colleague Micah Richards.

"Why's that? Well, no comment! Did he oversteps the mark? No, I think he gets paid to do his job and I think all of you do and it's part and parcel of football, he has to give his opinion and whether we agree with it or not is a different story! (laughs).

"Punditry? Yeah, I wouldn't mind it (after retiring). Especially your show, it looks a bit light-hearted but hopefully I've got a few years left. After it, I'll maybe give you a call to see if you can hook me up.

"You ask this (favourite pundit) every week. What I would say is Peter Schmeichel is waving his hands to me off camera and I don't think the Liverpool fans will be too happy with that one.

"Look I am not going to lie, I had when I was younger, I had an Arsenal kit with Thierry Henry on the back. I've got to say Thierry, but Carra, you know I respect what you do, a Liverpool legend."
