Raiders coach/GM search: Selling Tom Brady

Thursday, it became crystal clear that new Las Vegas Raiders part owner Tom Brady will have a major decision-making role with the team.

Brady reportedly was a part of the decision to surprisingly fire general manager Tom Telesco. The Raiders are now trying to appeal to the top coaching candidates by making a clean slate and starting over.

This is the third time in three years they Raiders are looking for a new coach and a new general manager. This is the sixth time in just over 13 years that Mark Davis has run the team that they are hiring a full-time coach. The Raiders have 15 coaches this century, which leads the league by far.

As a result, they have not been able to attract the top candidates because of that instability.

The Raiders hope to change that perception by making Brady the face of the organization and the leader of change.

Sure, Davis is still there, but Brady gives the team instant credibility because of his stature as the greatest football player of all time.

This may be the reason why Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has been very choosy about jobs, has accepted an interview request (he talks to the team Friday) despite the fact they don’t have a quarterback.

They have Brady, and for now, that is a selling point.

If the Raiders are ever going to be known as a stable organization this Brady-led hiring process has to work.

If it goes, the Raiders will be known as a place who careers can flourish not stall.

They already have aa great stadium, a state-of-the-art facility and no state taxes, this is a big box to check.

Now, it’s up to Brady to come through and be good at this job. There are no guarantees, though. We’ve seen other legendary sports figures fail in a leadership role in their post-playing days.

But the Raiders need Brady to come through as an owner like he did as a player.

They also may need him to curtail his broadcasting career and concentrate full-time on the team. Most NFL decision makers are solely focused on that job. But that may not be an immediate move.

Still, Brady is now the Raiders’ face and he must change how the rest of the league looks at them and nailing these hires would go a long way toward that,
