As vocal as Sourav Ganguly is about Rohit Sharma and his white-ball skills as skipper and batter, the former is worried about Rohit's form in red-ball.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said that what has surprised him is Rohit Sharma’s form in Tests in the last four to five years, adding that he can play way better than he has done in this span of time.

India played 10 Tests across five months against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia, winning just three.

Ganguly expressed his worry about Rohit Sharma’s form in red-ball cricket, which has gone downhill over the past four months.

“What has surprised me is his form in red ball over the last 4-5 years. A player of his stature and ability, can do much better than what he has done. He must put on his thinking cap because we have 5 Tests against England and that’s going to be another hard series," Ganguly said while speaking to RevSportz.

“Just like the way it was in Australia. It’s going to seam; it’s going to swing. India need him to perform in the red ball but in white ball, he is one of the greatest ever," Ganguly added.

The Champions Trophy win has added to the aura of Rohit and it would not be a surprise if he travels to England as the leader of the pack even though Ajit Agarkar and his team are yet to make a decision on the Test tour beginning June 20.

According to reports, a consensus hasn’t been reached on Rohit as an automatic choice for leadership. Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness status is a problem and so does the lack of a distinct captaincy prospect in the next line of young Indian players.

Rohit was under pressure to perform in the Champions Trophy, as a 1-3 series loss to Australia accentuated his poor form. But the winning run in Dubai has given the captain breathing space and elbow room.

But the question remains if Agarkar and his team will consider success in ODIs while deciding on the more challenging Tests, where the returns have been modest of late.

Rohit has scored 524 runs in seven Tests in England, at an average of 40.3 but with just one hundred to his name.
