Sixteen years after their historic first title, Spain find themselves in the best position yet for a second triumph at the FIFA men’s World Cup.

They have not mustered more than a win at each of the three tournament appearances since 2010, but this is a new emerging, exciting generation of footballers.

Spain won every game at the European Championship in 2024 and followed up with the Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024. They aim to become the first nation in men’s football history to simultaneously hold the world, Olympic and continental titles.

La Roja are in Group H with two-time winners Uruguay, Asian outfit Saudi Arabia and tournament debutants Cabo Verde.

Lamine Yamal has been Spain’s marvel since his memorable breakthrough as a 16-year-old at EURO 2024, since adding two La Liga titles and two individual Laureus awards to his accolades. What can the teenager achieve on his World Cup debut?

The Spanish midfield is bursting with quality, anchored by 2024 Ballon D’Or winner Rodri, who is aiming to return to full fitness ahead of the tournament. Pedri will also be key, the 23-year-old maestro closing in on half a century of caps.

Among the young talent establishing themselves in the national setup is Fermín López, who was part of the EUROS-winning squad before becoming an Olympic gold medallist with six goals in six games.

But he misses out on the World Cup squad, having suffered a broken bone in his foot.

Spain’s World Cup squad does not include any Real Madrid players for the first time in the competition’s history with defender Dean Huijsen missing out on selection for the 2026 tournament.
