Rene Meulensteen argues Man Utd target could unlock Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo with what he does 'on the ball'

Rene Meulensteen is convinced that both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo would find much-needed “help” from what one key Manchester United target could offer.

Matheus Cunha arrived at Old Trafford first after Manchester United signed him from Wolves last June, while Bryan Mbeumo was snapped up the following month.

Both Mbeumo and Cunha were key additions to the United first-team squad last summer alongside striker Benjamin Sesko and shot-stopper Senne Lammens.

Mbeumo, who was signed from Brentford, has been a standout performer and has netted seven times and registered an assist in 17 matches in his debut season.

Cunha, meanwhile, has been influential in the Man Utd attacking set-up and has scored four times and picked up an assist in 20 matches across all competitions.

Rene Meulensteen now believes that Wharton would offer exactly what Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have been missing under Ruben Amorim this season.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, he told Sam Allardyce: “There are a few players that have to move on.

“I see a lot of good in Kobbie Mainoo — he has to improve over time. I’m also a big fan of [Adam] Wharton at Crystal Palace. He’s so tidy on the ball, always looks to get it forward, and that’s what Cunha and Mbuemo need to help them.

“[Elliott] Anderson at Nottingham Forest is also a very good player — he’s dynamic and energetic.”

Former Man Utd first-team coach Meulensteen insisted that the Red Devils still need a major clearout of their squad and to improve key areas of the overall team.

“United have a few individuals in the squad that are not good enough,” he said.

“They concede far too many goals, so defensively they’re not solid. Every team that has the courage to have a go at them is going to create things.”

United are back in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon and the Red Devils will host crosstown rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in their next clash.
