Rory McIlroy was forced to give up $2.5 million home but then purchased $22M mansion instead

One look at Rory McIlroy's old home and it's easy to see how the Northern Irish golfer honed his craft to such a high standard.

At 35, McIlroy is currently ranked third in the world and is recognized as one of the standout players of his era. Despite a fifth major title proving elusive since his last victory in 2014, he's renowned for his ability to navigate the world's most challenging courses and apply intense pressure on his rivals.

Experience at major tournaments is valuable, but it's through relentless practice and repetition that McIlroy has become the golfing star he is today. His dream $2.52 million home provided the perfect setting for this, complete with its own putting green and, astonishingly, a personal driving range.

While laying the groundwork for his first two major wins – the 2011 US Open and 2012 PGA Championship – he was living in a jaw-dropping mansion in his homeland. Whenever he found the time, McIlroy could take his putter to his private green or launch a few balls down his exclusive driving range.

As if that wasn't impressive enough, his estate also sprawled across 14 acres of land and boasted a gym and a tennis court. However, as his reputation grew on the PGA Tour, McIlroy spent more time traveling than enjoying his dream home.

Once it was clear that a move was necessary, he reluctantly sold his Northern Ireland residence to TV presenter Gary McCausland. The celebrity disclosed that he paid slightly less than McIlroy's $2.52M asking price, though he didn't disclose the exact amount.

McIlroy, whose net worth is estimated at around $283.6M according to the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List, splurged on a new $22M mansion in Jupiter, Florida, previously owned by fellow golfing great Ernie Els. While its 2.4-acre plot is smaller than his former Northern Ireland property, the new home features nine bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, an infinity pool, games room, home theatre, and recording studio, as well as a tennis court and gym.

Although there's no space for his own driving range or putting green, he can drive 90 minutes out of Miami to a golf course conveniently located next to his personal six-car garage. McIlroy also invested in another substantial property in Northern Ireland—a grand 19th-century estate spanning 200 acres in County Down, complete with its own private golf course.

Additionally, he owns an apartment in New York, a personal villa in the United Arab Emirates, and another property in La Quinta, California. In the third installment of Netflix's documentary series, 'Full Swing,' McIlroy admitted that his wife, Erica Stoll, enjoys the British weather, favoring it over Florida's scorching rays. "If it was up to her, she wouldn't move to England straightaway, but she definitely wants to spend more time there," he said.

McIlroy will hope to finally end his wait for a fifth major title this year. At the start of 2025, he's showing signs that he might clinch his elusive title and end his 11-year dry spell.

The World No. 3 kicked things off with a T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January, then dazzled in his win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month. It hasn't all been smooth sailing, though. He hit a bump at the Genesis Invitational, wrestling his way to a three-under-par and a T-17 finish after a tough weekend.
