"Rohit Sharma should have played the last Test against Australia": Ex-player accuses India captain of running away from his responsibility

Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim has blasted Rohit Sharma for opting out of the fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He mentioned that the India captain was given the responsibility to lead the team for the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

India lost by 1-3 against Australia. Rohit, who failed to score runs in the three matches, skipped the final red-ball match in Sydney, with Jasprit Bumrah replacing the veteran for the second time.

During his conversation with SportsNext, Karim was asked about Rohit’s decision.

“Rohit Sharma should have played the last Test and I don’t think he made the right decision. The selectors and the BCCI gave him responsibility for five Tests, but he left in between. He should have led the side till the Sydney Test. Every player goes through such phases,” he said.

He mentioned that Rohit should have led from the front despite his poor returns with the bat.

“Despite failing with the bat, he should have shown passion and will to lead the side from the front. He is a good batter and that’s why he was given a chance to lead the side. If the players were not performing, Rohit should have fought for them. I was surprised that Rohit decided to quit,” he added.

Rohit also missed the first Test to spend time with his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, after the birth of their second child. He amassed 31 runs at an average of 6.20 in five innings.
