Barcelona Face Transfer Battle With PSG for Chelsea Target

PSG manager Luis Enrique has shown flexibility with the No. 9 role, often deploying non-traditional strikers. Last season, Ousmane Dembélé filled that position as the team captured the treble, including the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title.

While PSG has Gonçalo Ramos, who can play as a central striker, the Portugal international frequently comes off the bench. That leaves Enrique the option to target a striker who fits his preferred style in the future.

In 2024, Enrique and PSG were reportedly interested in a forward who could fill their No. 9 needs. At the time, the Ligue 1 club had an eye on Julián Álvarez, who ultimately signed with Atlético de Madrid.

Nonetheless, could the Ligue 1 side be looking to sign the player in the near future after missing out on him last year? The Chelsea Chronicle reports that Álvarez is considering leaving Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona reportedly being the leading option. Meanwhile, Chelsea and PSG remain closely monitoring the situation.

In a recent interview with France Football, the Argentine was asked about the chance of joining PSG or Barcelona down the line.

“Do I plan to play for PSG or Barcelona in the coming years? Honestly, I don’t know,” Álvarez said. “I see what’s being said on social media… In Spain, there’s a lot of talk about me and Barcelona. When I signed with Atlético last year, there was also a lot of talk about Paris.

“It’s true, there were discussions between PSG officials and my agent—they showed interest in signing me—but it didn’t happen. For now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll take stock at the end of the season.”

Unless Atlético de Madrid decides to sell or the player requests a move, he is expected to remain with the club for the foreseeable future. Moreover, his contract runs through 2030, giving Atlético full control in any potential transfer negotiations involving the Argentine.
