Czech Republic reaches Billie Jean King Cup final after Spain win

The Czech Republic’s tennis team reached the Billie Jean King Cup final after defeating Spain in the semifinal in Shenzhen, China. Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova won their singles matches in straight sets, securing an early 2-0 victory for the team.

As Dawn reports, the Czech team will play in the tournament final for the first time since 2018 and remains in contention for its 12th title.

Muchova earned the first point

World No. 8 Karolina Muchova, who was a Wimbledon finalist this year, opened the scoring in the tie. She defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7:5, 6:4.

Muchova said she had not played in the Billie Jean King Cup for a long time, so it was important for her to earn the first point for the team and reduce the pressure on Noskova ahead of her match.

Noskova sealed the tie

Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova defeated Cristina Bucsa 7:6 (7:5), 6:2 in the second match. In the first set, the 21-year-old Czech player took a 4:2 lead, but her opponent cut the deficit to 4:5. Noskova won the tiebreak, then at 2:2 in the second set won four consecutive games, breaking serve twice.

The Czech team is captained by former world No. 1 in doubles Barbora Strycova. Noskova said the team wants to make its captain proud: Strycova was part of the Czech squad during the country’s previous tournament victory. In Sunday’s final, the Czech Republic will face either Italy, the two-time defending champion, or Ukraine.
