Altay Bayindir’s costly mistake on Sunday granted Arsenal three points as Manchester United failed to overturn a one-goal deficit in the first game of the Premier League season.

Manchester United went into the transfer window this summer to improve Ruben Amorim’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The emphasis from the beginning of the window was on enhancing United’s attacking department. That was achieved by signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Now, questions are being asked whether Ineos will back Amorim by strengthening another area of the team.

All summer long at Old Trafford, the message has been clear: goalkeeper is not a priority position to bolster in the transfer window.

That means Andre Onana, who missed United’s defeat to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the season, will still be the first-choice goalkeeper.

Altay Bayindir is the current back-up option, and he made a howler that granted Arsenal three points on Sunday.

The Turkey international has been tipped to leave United in search of regular football this summer.

Gordon Hill reacts to Altay Bayindir howler

Onana missed the entirety of pre-season with a hamstring injury and was not ready to face Arsenal, hence why Bayindir was recalled to the line-up.

The former Fenerbahce stopper failed to stop a Declan Rice cross that was then nodded home by Ricardo Calafiori.

United dominated the game and deserved more from it, but they were unable to respond to Arsenal’s 13-minute opener.

At the other end of the pitch, Arsenal stopper David Raya was awarded the player of the match award by former United captain Gary Neville.

Bayindir’s mistake sparked a reaction from United legend Gordon Hill, who is remembered fondly for winning the FA Cup in 1977 and preventing Liverpool from winning the treble.

Hill took to social media during the game on Sunday.

Initially reacting to Bayindir’s howler, Hill called it a “complete and utter mess” from the goalkeeper before explaining that his mistake only put the team under more pressure from the start.

From Emiliano Martinez to Senne Lammens, the Red Devils have options in the market, but they also need to sell players to generate funds for further activity in the market.

Hill took to social media again 24 hours after the game to express his opinion on United needing to sign a new goalkeeper.

The United legend didn’t elaborate on who he would specifically like United to sign next.
