‘Buy One, Get One Free’ - Coco Gauff, 18, Comes Up With an Ecstatic Statement After Surpassing Maria Sharapova in a Rare Record

Coco Gauff is one of the most promising rising players in tennis. She touched the headlines for the first time by outclassing the seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, in the opening round of the 2019 Wimbledon. Since then, Gauff has not left the charts. She has piled several ‘youngest’ titles under her name.

In the same year of her victory against Williams, she became the youngest player to win a WTA trophy since 2004 at the Linz Open. Following that, this season, she made a big jump to share the pedestal of the youngest Grand Slam finalist with five-time majors champion Maria Sharapova. And now another title of the same category awaits her.

Coco Gauff achieves a new milestone

Coco Guaff, with the help of her splendid run this season, will soon make her WTA Finals debut. The 18-year-old will lock horns with the best WTA professionals in the tournament. However, the highlight of the news is that she broke yet another youngest record by qualifying for this event. Gauff is the first player to reach the WTA Finals before turning 19 since Maria Sharapova in 2005.

Also, she is the first American to do this so since Lindsay Davenport in 1994. “I’m just super excited. I wasn’t really thinking about it, to be honest,” she said.

“It’s my first WTA Finals for singles and well doubles. So I guess it’s buy one get one free,” Gauff added. The 51st singles edition of the event will commence on October 31 and will name its winner on November 7.

Apart from Gauff, Cincinnati Masters champion Caroline Garcia, the French Open and US Open champion Iga Swiatek, former World No 2 Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula will also be present in the singles draw. Further, the American can expect huge crowd support as the tournament will be held in Fort Worth, Texas.

After struggling in the hard court swing with just a couple of noteworthy runs, Gauff caught pace in the clay. She made up to the round of 16 of both the Madrid and Italian Open and riding high on form entered the finals of the French Open. She took down players like Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep in the initial rounds.

The World No 7, without dropping any sets, booked a finals match with Iga Swiatek, the pole who herself was carrying a winning streak of 34 matches. Though she failed to outclass Swiatek, her game had already unlocked a new peak.

Post that, she executed a semifinal run in the grass courts of Berlin and a quarterfinal run in both the Canadian Masters and the US Open. Currently, she is competing in Guadalajara Open Akron and will soon lock horns with Martina Trevisan for a seat in the quarterfinals.
