‘Oh my gosh!’ – Dominic Calvert-Lewin shocks Sky Sports pundit live on nightmare Leeds debut

Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered a dreadful Leeds United debut as Sheffield Wednesday knocked Daniel Farke’s side out of the League Cup.

Calvert-Lewin joined Leeds as a free agent after leaving Everton after nine seasons on Merseyside, with the expectation that the striker would provide the goals Leeds require to stay in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has had an injury hit last couple of seasons which has hampered his progress, but Manchester United and Sunderland also showed interested in signing him.

Farke handed Calvert-Lewin his debut off the bench against Sheffield Wednesday with Leeds looking for a breakthrough with half an hour of the tie remaining.

Clinton Morrison stunned at Dominic Calvert-Lewin moment

After a Karl Darlow own goal, Jayden Bogle equalised for Leeds with just nine minutes of the match remaining.

With the tie heading to penalties, Leeds pushed for a late winner and ex-Sheffield United man Calvert-Lewin spurned a golden late chance from close-range to win the contest for the visitors.

Instead the match headed to spot-kick’s and after Joel Piroe had his effort saved, Calvert-Lewin stepped up and blazed his strike from 12 yards over the crossbar as Leeds crashed out.

On Sky Sports Soccer Special, former Sheffield Wednesday striker Clinton Morrison said Calvert-Lewin should have done “miles better” with the chances he had in the game before shouting “OH MY GOSH” as Calvert-Lewin missed his penalty.

He said: “They’ve played a strong team today, a lot of new signings, so Daniel Farke knows [they should have been better], Morrison commented.

“And it’s Calvert-Lewin to take the next one, so ooh he needs to score this or it could be goodnight.

“He could have had a hat-trick, he could have. He was unlucky with the last one but the two before that, should do better, should do miles better.

“But he is a bit ring-rusty. Let’s see how he [does], he’s stepping up here now… OH MY GOSH! He’s cleared the cross bar! It’s higher than Bruno Fernandes the other day.

“There’s no-one to get the balls because there’s no fans in there! Oh my! Oh wow.”

Football Insider Verdict

Calvert-Lewin showed that he may not be the right striker to steer Leeds to Premier League safety following his debut against Championship opposition.

The striker did not show his ruthlessness or calmness in-front of goal in the chances which came his way, which will be of concern to Farke.

Leeds have only scored one goal in their two Premier League matches so far, and that was a penalty which was controversially awarded.

Appearances 239 Goals 57 Assists 18 Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s Premier League record.

The same problem has faced Leeds against Everton and Sheffield Wednesday, with the Whites struggling to break down low blocks.

Calvert-Lewin still needs to regain sharpness in-front of goal, and Leeds must play to his strengths, but a proven Premier League striker is not what the 28-year-old has been over the past few seasons.

Survival may rest on the final few days of the transfer window and Farke being able to sign a number nine that can reach double figures for goals in the top-flight.
