Liverpool transfer news as Mohamed Salah plea made and confusion over Jordan Henderson's future

The final day of January typically means the end of the mid-season transfer window, but there will be no such drama on Friday.

The market remains open until Monday and, as the window creeps closer to a conclusion, there’s no shortage of rumors and reports. A lot of that is surrounding players elsewhere, with Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham expected to be making additions before Monday's deadline.

For Liverpool, no major last-minute additions are expected, a situation a certain section of fans might find frustrating, but there’s not a lot Arne Slot needs to add to his Liverpool squad at present.

That might be different in the summer, however, with uncertainty continuing to surround the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. All three have just five months left on their Liverpool contracts and are free to negotiate with overseas clubs.

Of that trio, it’s Salah whose name has been in the news most recently. Having previously been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, reports over the last few days have indicated he could complete a move to Saudi Arabia. In fact, the Telegraph this week claimed a move to Al-Hilal appears most likely if he does leave Liverpool.

On Thursday, the stakes were raised further with Saudi Arabia’s minister of sport, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, revealing in an interview for Piers Morgan Uncensored that he would love to see Salah play his football in Saudi Arabia.

Asked if the Liverpool star represented the "big prize", Al-Faisal replied: “Well, definitely, because if he ticks all the right boxes, even for us, we'd love to have him.

“He's Egyptian, and we have a very good relationship, and we feel like we are one with the Egyptians as well, from our culture and our history and so on. So to have Mo Salah or other players that are good role models would be a pleasure and a privilege to have in the Saudi League. Will it happen or not? That's up to the clubs to decide and to see what negotiations go on.”

Meanwhile, one of Salah’s ex-team-mates could be on the move as well - however, there are conflicting reports about Jordan Henderson’s future.

Fabrizio Romano claimed on Thursday that the former Liverpool skipper had almost agreed to join Monaco in a permanent deal - which could set up a reunion with the Reds given they might face the Ligue 1 outfit in the last-16 of the Champions League.

However, reports from the Netherlands refuted Romano’s suggestion. De Telegraaf claims Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes rejected the bid as Henderson is seen as crucial to the team. The outlet adds a deal next summer remains a possibility, with the midfielder open to joining Monaco.

The plot thickened further when later that night Henderson started in Ajax’s Europa League game against Galatasaray but was stripped of the captain’s armband. The 34-year-old was replaced by Daniele Rugani in the latter stages and it will be fascinating to see if he is still involved when Ajax takes on Feyenoord this weekend in the Eredivise.
