Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden suffered a second-round exit in the men’s doubles event of Wimbledon 2024 on Saturday.

Bopanna-Ebden, seeded second, lost to the German pair of Hendrik Jebens and Constantin Frantzen 6-3, 7-6(7-4) in one hour and 18 minutes.

The Indo-Australian pair, the reigning Australian Open champions, failed to control the match in the early stages Jebens and Frantzen strolled to a 4-1 lead without much resistance.

Although Bopanna-Ebden were able to pull things back at 5-3, they failed to prevent their opponents from winning the first set.

The second set saw both pairs matching each other game-for-game and were inseparable at 6-6. In the resulting tie-break set, Jebens-Frantzen took a 5-3 lead and won 7-4 to make their way into the third round of the tournament.

Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri, alongside his French partner Albano Olivetti, were also ousted from the second round of the Wimbledon 2024 men’s doubles competition after losing to eighth-seeded German duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 on Friday.

Bhambri-Olivetti won a tightly-contested first set. The second set too was a close affair, with both pairs not giving away any advantage in the opening nine games.

However, towards the end of the set, a string of unforced errors from the Indo-French duo saw the Germans draw level in the match.

Bhambri and Olivetti lost further control in the decider, conceding five double faults and as many unforced errors. Krawietz and Puetz left no room for error and were clinical with their service game to wind up the set 6-3 and progress to the third round.

With the elimination of Bopanna and Bhambri in the men’s doubles second round, India’s campaign at Wimbledon 2024 came to an end. N Balaji and Sumit Nagal also competed in the men’s doubles with different partners but crashed out in the first round. Nagal was also eliminated from the men’s singles first round.
