Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney have slated Alexander Isak's recent conduct amid Liverpool transfer interest. The former England heroes have warned the Newcastle United star that 'there is a right way to do it', and he has fallen short of those standards, according to Shearer and Rooney.

Isak is now reportedly intent on never playing for Eddie Howe's side again and is attempting to force through a transfer with three years left on a contract he signed upon arrival at St. James' Park in 2022. Liverpool have been the strongest suitors as they launched a £110m offer earlier this month.

But the Premier League champions were rejected by their rivals and at present there's no plan to make a second attempt, the ECHO understands.

At no point in the whole saga has Isak filed a formal transfer request to Newcastle, although he has been made to train alone and is not up for selection in matches.

That exile continued as the Sweden striker was absent from the Magpies' opener vs Aston Villa.

"I think it's a difficult one with Isak," Rooney began to explain his views on BBC's Match of the Day.

"He has to go about it the right way.

"There's ways of leaving a football club, whether that's the football club wants to get rid of you and if you want to leave to go to a different club, there's a right way to do it.

"I've been there myself where I've asked to leave Manchester United in my career, at times.

"You have to do it the right way and be professional about it."

Alongside the former Everton and United player was ex-Newcastle striker Shearer, who responded to Rooney with disappointment over the way Liverpool target Isak has handled matters.

"But you put in a transfer request," said Shearer.

"You didn't refuse to train, you didn't refuse to play, and so there's a way to do it and Alexander isn't going about it in the right way at all," he added.

"You just can't do that when you've got a three-year contract."

To conclude the conversation, Rooney posed a worry to Anfield chiefs that may be intent on landing Isak.

He asked: "Also for the team whose trying to sign him, obviously it looks like Liverpool whose trying to sign him, you have to wonder if that's the sort of player you want? [A player] who is going to desert his teammates, who's going to walk away from a huge football club.

"It's a good opportunity with Liverpool, but it has to be done in the right way, I don't think it is."
