Imam-ul-Haq and Rizwan barred from President’s Trophy

In Pakistan, cricketers Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan have been barred from competing in the domestic first-class President’s Trophy Grade-I tournament, which starts on Saturday at four venues. According to Dawn, the players’ participation in the competition has been restricted until the investigation involving them is completed.

Investigation into a possible leak

Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) questioned both players on Thursday following a complaint by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The investigation concerns alleged leaks of information from the national team’s dressing room during Pakistan’s Test tour of England.

Imam-ul-Haq and Rizwan were among seven players recalled from the squad after Pakistan’s defeats in the first two Tests of the three-match series. Five cricketers were removed from the squad for sporting reasons, while the PCB said it had launched an internal investigation into Imam-ul-Haq and Rizwan.

Participation in the domestic tournament

Imam-ul-Haq was appointed captain of the Oil and Gas Development Company team, while Rizwan was included in the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines squad as vice-captain. At the same time, according to the publication’s sources, neither player would have been able to play in the first round because they did not take part in mandatory fitness testing before the start of the competition.

According to a Dawn source, the cricketers were summoned to the NCCIA office in Lahore and questioned for about four hours. They told investigators that their mobile phones were already in the agency’s possession and could be sent for forensic examination. The players also reportedly requested additional time to submit written explanations.

Earlier, national selector and PCB director of high performance Aaqib Javed said Imam-ul-Haq would also be investigated because he did not come out to bat in either innings of the second Test against England at Lord’s. Pakistan lost that match by 194 runs.
