Paul Merson drops emphatic score prediction for Newcastle vs Wolves

Wolves travel up north to take on Newcastle United in the Premier League tonight.

Vitor Pereira’s side beat Bristol City 2-1 in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, but the focus is now back on top-flight football – and it’s a huge game.

Newcastle are in extremely good form having won eight games on the bounce across all competitions.

But Wolves have done well under Pereira so far since he replaced Gary O’Neil, winning three out of five games.

Pereira gave a positive injury update yesterday ahead of the game, with Matheus Cunha, Nelson Semedo, Craig Dawson and Mario Lemina all back available after their injuries.

It will be fascinating to see how the game pans out, and pundit Paul Merson has now made his score prediction for the game.

After losing to Nottingham Forest the last time out in the league, Wolves could do with getting back to winning ways.

But this will be one tough game, especially with it being at St. James’ Park.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

If Wolves can pull a result off here, Pereira will make a serious statement.

Wolves have the potential to beat anyone on their day, but everyone will need to be on it tonight to get three points against the Magpies.

But Paul Merson doesn’t believe that will happen.

Predicting an emphatic 3-0 home win, he told Sportskeeda: “Newcastle are playing some amazing football with all their main players firing at the moment. They’re a team that’s absolutely flying! Newcastle have one eye on the Carabao Cup final after beating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of the semi-final last week. I bet they wish they could play the return leg this week instead of next month because by that time, they risk having injuries or losing steam.

“I still expect Newcastle to win here though. Wolves enjoyed a kick-start when the new manager came in. But then they lost to Nottingham Forest and I can see them losing again in this one! It should be back to reality for Wolves.”

It seems there isn’t much faith from some in the media in the visitors for this game, with Chris Sutton also predicting a 3-0 win for Newcastle over Wolves.

Wolves can use last result vs Newcastle as fuel

Wolves played against Newcastle back in September and lost 2-1 at Molineux.

Wanderers had led up until the 75th minute in that game, before the Magpies turned the game around through Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes.

Wolves Newcastle Goals – 1 Goals – 2 Shots (on target) – 12 (5) Shots (on target) – 14 (6) Possession – 48% Possession – 52% Fouls – 17 Fouls – 6 Corners – 4 Corners – 7 Stats from Wolves vs Newcastle in last meeting (15/09/24)

Schar’s strike from range was deflected off Dawson which was really unlucky, before Barnes was allowed too much space to fire in from distance as well.

Wolves had chances to carve out a bigger lead in that game, and it was a frustrating end result.

The players ought to use that result as motivation tonight to try and exact revenge.
