Brian O'Driscoll has reportedly been denied membership at an exclusive tennis club in Dublin.

As reported by the the Irish Mail on Sunday and Extra.ie, the former rugby star applied to become a member of the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club, but it’s governing committee declined his application. The publication reported that the club declined to comment on why O'Driscoll's application was rejected.

The club has 2,000 members and up to 292 people applied to become members between December and January. Of these, only 80 memberships were granted.

Annual fees at the exclusive club are €2,500 but new members also have to pay a once off joining fee of €8,000. According to Extra.ie, one insider said: “It is the talk of the place. No one can understand why Brian O’Driscoll was refused. People would have loved if he had got in, can you imagine the cache?”

According to the publication, those familiar with the application process speculated that the 46-year-old was declined membership because he is not a noted tennis player.

In order to apply for membership at the club, two current members who have been there for at least 18 months must provide letters of support. They must also know the potential candidate for at least two years.

O'Driscoll, 46, retired from rugby in 2014. He shares three children with his wife Amy Huberman.
