Derry's Cotter makes surprise move to CSKA Sofia

Barry Cotter has completed a move to CSKA Sofia from Derry City for an undisclosed fee.

Cotter joined Derry from Barnsley on a free transfer in February of this year and made 30 appearances, scoring two goals.

The Clare man played every minute of Derry's recent Europa League double header against the Bulgarian side.

Derry lost 5-3 on aggregate with Cotter scoring an own goal in the first leg. Despite that he impressed their European opponents enough to be approached and signed.

CSKA will be the 27-year-old's ninth club in his career but the first time for a team outside of Ireland or England.

There were previous spells with Limerick FC, Shamrock Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic, alongside time across the English Football League.

CSKA Sofia play the final of the Bulgarian Super Cup tomorrow and sit third in the table after seven matches.

In an official statement on the club's website, Derry's interim manager Mark Connolly said it was a move that suited all parties.

"Barry was obviously an important member of our squad, however this is a fantastic opportunity for him, and the club didn’t want to stand in his way.

"We want to wish Barry every success at CSKA."
