Marc Marquez breaks silence on gruesome photo of damaged shoulder

Marc Marquez has opened up about the injury photo that stunned MotoGP.

The nine-time champion posted several behind-the-scenes shots from the start of the season on his Instagram feed, but one understandably drew all the attention.

Hanging from a piece of training gear with his arms aloft, the incredible damage to the 33-year-old's right shoulder can be seen in full detail.

Marquez has undergone seven operations on his right arm in recent years, but his shoulder is currently the biggest concern, having dislocated it last season.

Experts and rivals have already expressed their shock over the images, and Marquez has now explained why he decided to reveal all.

"I posted the photo because I believe that is the best way to stop talking about my arm," he told MotoGP.

"What I've learned throughout my career is that when there are question marks, rumours, and speculation, everything becomes easier if you're honest.

"I knew, and I know, exactly what I have, but this way, you already have the full picture.

"You've already heard from my doctor, and the doctor is the right person to explain what's going on with the body.

"Now that everything is clear, I can focus entirely on trying to fight for this amazing championship with what I have."

Marquez's doctor did indeed speak about the severity of the injury, which needed to be addressed during the current season due to a bent screw that was causing pain.

Surgeon Samuel Antuna spoke to El Periodico, comparing the look of Marquez's shoulder to a 'shark bite'.

He explained: "He doesn't have a normal arm at all, nor will he ever have one again. Marc struggles to play padel; that says it all.

"If Marc were [tennis great] Carlos Alcaraz, he would have had to retire from professional tennis.

"Marc is trying to compensate for all these shortcomings by training even harder, if possible, and adapting his riding style to the characteristics of his arm now.

"Now, after everything we've experienced and learned together, he's more mature and thinks things through much more beforehand.

"Clinically, it's difficult to understand what Marc is doing, the way he keeps winning races."

He added: "The indentation in the right armpit isn't a shark bite.

"It's the result of how much the muscles have been manipulated, loosened, and repositioned in the various operations.

"He's not missing any muscles, but they're not perfect; they're a bit atrophied, a bit altered, and that's why he doesn't have as much strength in that arm as in his left.

"That arm is very limited in strength, especially the biceps. I think the expression that Marc is currently racing with one and a half arms is appropriate to the current state of his right arm."
