Wayne Rooney has reflected on Michael Carrick’s perfect start back at Manchester United, with three wins from as many games against teams in the top half of the Premier League table.

Manchester United had been coasting to three points at Old Trafford, leading 2-0 after goals from Casemiro and Matheus Cunha.

Wolves turned the game on its head by forcing a comeback in the second half. Raul Jiminez scored from the penalty spot in the 85th minute and Kevin equalised in the first minute of stoppage time.

It looked like Michael Carrick was about to draw his first game since returning to United as head coach until the end of the season, but Benjamin Sesko popped up at the very end with a stunning strike to deliver victory for United.

The win reminded many of the days when United would win games late on in the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson. There were signs that Carrick is bringing back the never-say-die attitude that served Ferguson well for 26 years at Old Trafford.

On the latest episode of the Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney hails the work Carrick has done with the team thus far. He also backed his close friend to become the head coach long-term if United continue their current form for the remainder of the season.

“I think Michael’s doing a really good job and whatever anyone else says,” Rooney said.

“If he continues with this form until the end of the season, then they have to give him the job.”

Few points are able tell their listeners who United should appoint next, but many can explain who isn’t right for the job.

United need to be open-minded when it comes to Carrick, especially if we remain in the top four and compete for places with Aston Villa and Man City, who were both clear of the Red Devils in the table until now.

With Tottenham coming to Old Trafford on Saturday, United have a chance to make it four wins on the bounce before travelling to West Ham.

Carrick will take each game at a time, and some of his former teammates will be either ranting or raving about the job he’s doing.
