Jannik Sinner gives his theory on why Alexander Bublik was so poor during their match at the US Open

Jannik Sinner, after what many considered to be a poor performance against Denis Shapovalov in the previous round, is back to business as usual.

After all, he crushed Alexander Bublik to move into the US Open quarter-finals, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

It’s always difficult to predict how the Kazakhstani superstar will perform against the world’s best, given he clearly has the tools to trouble them. And, having snatched a win over Jannik Sinner earlier this year, there was cause for optimism.

However, Bublik’s level dropped, the world number one raised his, and it created a perfect storm that curtailed any chances of a hard-fought match.

Speaking in his post-match interview, one reporter wanted to get to the bottom of why Sinner won with so much ease.

Jannik Sinner explains his dominant win over Alexander Bublik

The 24-year-old gave a handful of reasons to try to explain Bublik’s struggles yesterday, but chief among them should be the excellence of the eventual victor.

Naturally, as a humble and magnanimous individual, he would not say that. He did, however, note: “We don’t have to forget that he had a five-set match and it finished very late against Tommy [Paul], he was a different player.

“It can happen. This is the sport. Some days they are good and some days they are not good. Maybe I will have a day where things don’t work and I lose easily. You never know what is happening.

“It is very unpredictable, the sport. I tried to move him around, tried to see how he was moving and make it more on the physical side.

“Today I played some good tennis at times, at times he gave me some free points. I just tried to stay as consistent as possible, and I think that today, that was maybe the main key.”

It seems ironic to talk about such dominance now after all the fanfare that surrounded his last win, with many left stunned as Sinner dropped just one set against Shapovalov.

It was even said that players in the locker room would have been talking about Sinner and his potential fragility after that result. They certainly will be now.

Jannik Sinner silences the doubters

It seems like Laura Robson’s decision to stick with Sinner as her prediction for the US Open title has been justified after this statement performance against a hugely in-form Bublik.

After all, he silenced the doubters by dominating a player whom only Carlos Alcaraz has won more ATP titles than this year.

His serving was immaculate after a little wobble against Shapovalov, and his groundstrokes were back to the usual relentless perfection we have become accustomed to.

If he can now maintain this level, a spot in the US Open final is almost guaranteed.

It will just be interesting to see whether it is enough against a red-hot Alcaraz, who has not looked this good in New York since he won the title in 2022.
