Nine’s Tom Morris reported on Tuesday evening that the 332-game Geelong star has been “unofficially earmarked” as Ross Lyon’s long-term successor, should rival clubs not poach him.

“One name who has emerged as a legitimate option to coach an AFL club soon is AFL Hall of Famer Corey Enright,” Morris said.

“St Kilda has unofficially earmarked Enright to succeed Ross Lyon whenever the time comes that Lyon steps away. This likelihood has been discussed among players, football staff, and even noted in conversations from Ross Lyon himself.

“It wouldn’t surprise some inside of Moorabbin if a handover was formalised some time before the end of the coach’s tenure in 2027.”

After retiring at the end of 2016, Enright immediately entered the coaching ranks at Geelong as an assistant coach — spending half a decade at the club until the end of 2021, where he moved across to St Kilda.

The three-time premiership player then spent a further three years as an assistant coach, before moving to the role of the Saints’ Head of Game Plan and Strategy at the start of this year.

Enright’s former coach and colleague Chris Scott is contracted until the end of 2026 as Geelong’s head coach, one year before Lyon at Moorabbin.
