The fans in the newly-reopened Copland Stand marked the big occasion with a massive display of banners and red pyrotechnics, filling the stadium with smoke and creating a fearsome atmosphere.

That wasn't enough for the supporters though, as they quickly opted for an even more explosive display.

Just as the smoke from the pyros was starting to swirl, fireworks began going off from within the stand in the fifth minute, causing a stop in play.

Lyon didn't look spooked though, and took the lead soon after the match resumed through Malick Fofana.

Tom Lawrence equalised for Gers within five minutes of the Lyon opener, but the visitors were quickly back in front thanks to former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

And the Frenchman was at it again just before half-time, blasting into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Rangers were victorious in their opening fixture of the Europa League league phase, beating Malmo 2-0 in Sweden with goals from Nedim Bajrimi and Ross McCausland.
