Liverpool sold a teenager who is now actually more valuable than Rio Ngumoha

Rio Ngumoha is one of the brightest prospects in world football, but a former Liverpool gem is actually worth more.

A path into the first team for Ngumoha has been earmarked after his prolific start to life at Anfield.

The Liverpool youngster scored a 100th-minute winner against Newcastle United on his Premier League debut back in August and was dubbed ‘frightening’ after the clash.

However, while it’s clear the 17-year-old is destined for big things, another former Reds teenager is actually worth more than him.

Giovanni Leoni and Rio Ngumoha’s values vs Ben Gannon-Doak

CIES Football Observatory has released a list of the most valuable teenagers in world football this week.

FC Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal tops the list, while Chelsea’s Estevao Willian is the most valuable young player in the Premier League (€118.1m).

The Blues, Tottenham and Arsenal all have a number of players included, while two Liverpool teenagers feature.

Giovanni Leoni, who signed from Parma this past summer, is given a value of €25.3m.

Ngumoha is worth a bit less at €20.4m, while the recently departed Ben Gannon-Doak is now valued at €27.2m, which works out at around £23.9m.

Gannon-Doak left Liverpool for Bournemouth in the most recent transfer window, costing an initial £20m plus a potential £5m in add-ons.

Liverpool buyback clause for Ben Doak

2024/25 saw the Scotsman impress in the Championship with Middlesbrough before his season was cut short due to injury.

The 19-year-old has since played 98 minutes of football across five matches for the Cherries this season.

He is yet to show his best form at the Vitality Stadium, but should that change, Liverpool have a buyback clause for Gannon-Doak.

Ben Jacobs confirmed that it was likely to be somewhere in the region of £50m.

He said when the transfer was completed: “More on Ben Doak, who will join Bournemouth for a £25m package. Liverpool have a buyback. As a rule, these tend to be agreed at at least double the transfer fee.

“Buyback included because Liverpool think Doak has elite potential, and regular first-team starts could yet see them return for him in the future.”
