US Olympic Committee expects participation surge after 2028 and 2034 Games

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee expects that the 2028 Games in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City will increase Americans’ interest in Olympic sports. The committee’s chief executive officer, Sarah Hirshland, said this in New York.

As Channel NewsAsia reports, the organization expects participation in Olympic sports to grow after the two Games in the United States, which will be held six years apart.

Atlanta experience

According to Hirshland, participation in some Olympic sports in the United States rose by double-digit percentages after the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She said the committee discussed preparations this week with national sports federations for the expected increase in interest after the Los Angeles Games.

Hirshland also noted that information now spreads much more freely through social media than it did in 1996.

Social media and colleges

The committee paid considerable attention to social media during the two most recent Games in Paris and Milan-Cortina, after the International Olympic Committee eased rules on athletes’ posts during the Olympics.

Hirshland suggested that the Games in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City could boost interest in less widespread Olympic sports at the college level. In her view, educational institutions should be ready to accommodate and support this interest, although American football has traditionally dominated U.S. college sports.
