French Open 2026: Naomi Osaka glitters in gold in opening-round win

Four-time tennis Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka knows how to turn heads.

The Japanese star opened her Roland-Garros 2026 campaign on Tuesday (26 May) by beating Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Court Suzanne Lenglen – but it was her on-court look that announced her arrival in Paris.

Osaka, currently ranked 16th in the world, stepped on to the red clay in a black corset and pleated skirt, designed by Kevin Germanier, according to the BBC, then peeled it back to reveal a glittering, gold-sequined Nike dress.

"Funny enough, you know the Eiffel Tower at night when its sparkly? I think I look like that a little bit," the 28-year-old said of the inspiration.

She said, jokingly, she had worried about being asked to leave the court.

"When the sun hits the dress, it reflects a lot, so I was a little scared the umpire was going to kick me off the court," Osaka said. "I got two back-up, normal dresses – thankfully I didn't have to wear them."

She will face Croatia's Donna Vekic in the second round.
