Man United and Chelsea have both been given hope in their pursuit of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

There have been questions around the future of the Argentina international in recent months, despite the fact he still has a contract in the Midlands until the summer of 2029.

Some believed Martinez was bidding farewell to Aston Villa with his emotional reaction after the club’s final home game of the season.

Meanwhile, after Unai Emery’s side controversially lost at Man United on the final day of the season, they have missed out on qualification for the Champions League.

The financial loss that has caused means the club may now have to sell players in the transfer window to avoid punishment for breaching Profit and Sustainability Regulations, one of which could be Martinez.

In the wake of that uncertainty around his future, the Aston Villa goalkeeper has attracted plenty of interest from elsewhere.

Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that Man United are trying hard to sign Martinez this summer.

According to a new update from the Daily Mail, the 32-year-old prefers to remain in Europe rather than move to Saudi Arabia, ahead of the World Cup next year.

It is therefore stated the Red Devils and Chelsea are the two sides in contention to sign the Argentine, whose camp have apparently given “encouragement” to the Premier League duo about a move.

However, it is also noted that either side will still have to make a significant investment if they are to sign Martinez in the transfer window.

It would make sense for both of these sides to work hard on a deal for the Aston Villa goalkeeper this summer.

First choice Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana is attracting interest from Monaco despite some poor errors this season, while Robert Sanchez also struggled as number one for Chelsea.

As a result, both clubs would benefit from improving their goalkeeping options, and as a World Cup winner who is already familiar with the Premier League, Martinez would do that.

The fact that there has been encouragement to the two clubs from the player’s camp could also put pressure on Aston Villa to sell, especially given their need to raise funds somehow.

That could therefore help either Man United or Chelsea to sign Martinez for a lower price than they might have got him for in other circumstances.

With all that taken into consideration, this may well be an opportunity that neither side can afford to pass up.
