Andre Russell to retire after first two T20Is against Australia

West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell has decided to retire from international cricket. As reported earlier by Cricbuzz, Russell, who has been named in the T20I squad for the series against Australia, will only play the first two matches at Sabina Park in his home nation - Jamaica. Matthew Forde has been named Russell's replacement for the last three T20Is in St. Kitts & Nevis.

The now 37-year-old Russell has made 84 appearances in T20Is for the West Indies with 1078 runs and 61 wickets to his name. He was also part of the winning team in the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup editions. With 561 T20 appearances across the global franchise circuit, he has amassed 9316 runs at a strike-rate of 168.31 and has taken 485 wickets.

"Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," Russell said. "When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others."

"I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean."

Daren Sammy paid rich tribute to the all-rounder. "Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor. Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come."

Maiden call-ups

The West Indies squad for the Australia T20Is also includes maiden call-ups for Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades. Seasoned campaigners Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder, and Rovman Powell have also been named in the 16-man squad announced by Cricket West Indies on Wednesday (July 16).

Andrew, 18, had made his international debut for the West Indies in the ODI version of the game last October and the highly regarded batting prospect has caught the eye of the support staff with his intent and range hitting against the spinners. He can also ply his trade with the gloves behind the stumps in the field.

Blades, a left-arm seamer, had made his international debut against Bangladesh in December 2024 in ODIs. He was the star with the ball in the inaugural West Indies Breakout League taking the most number of wickets in the PowerPlay.

The series will be played from July 20 to July 28. The first three games will be played at Sabina Park in Jamaica while the final three games will be hosted by Warner Park in St. Kitts.
