Premier League reaction: What's going wrong at Liverpool?

'Isak doesn't deserve to play ahead of Ekitike'

I wouldn't play Isak, he hasn't looked ready since coming from Newcastle.

He hasn't trained, hasn't had a pre-season. It's so important. While Newcastle were training he was probably sat at home on the phone to his agent for six hours a day trying to get a move.

It's so difficult when you don't have a pre-season. He might've done stuff by himself but he's paying the price of it.

On performances, he doesn't deserve to be playing ahead of Ekitike.

'Slot has a couple of decisions to make'

From a Liverpool point of view, Arne Slot has a couple of decisions to make.

Szobozslai looks like the better right back and suits going into midfield from that position, but does he like being there? No, but for the good of the team it would work better.

Then Frimpong comes on down the right and has more of an influence in ten minutes or so than Salah in the most of the same. He put two exceptional balls into the box, and Gakpo should have scored one of them. Ekitike did more when he came on up top than Isak did too.

Liverpool's bad run stretches back to last season

Liverpool

Liverpool's defeat to Manchester United means Arne Slot's side have now lost seven games in their last 16 stretching back into last season.

Including the penalty shoot-out defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, the Reds have lost seven games in all competitions since May.

Granted, the league title had already been sewn up by the time they tasted defeat to Chelsea and Brighton in the last campaign but it highlights the fact that complacency had set in a long while ago.

Seven defeats in 16 is far from the record you expect from champions and four in eleven this season is a million miles away from the pace they were setting this time last year.

'We need to stay humble'

Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk on the first goal/head injury: "I think the ball went long, first header was a United player, second by me. My elbow hit the player and he goes down and I went down. That angle it was difficult to score and he did. There was plenty of football left to be played [and score] and we didn't.

"We need to stay humble and stay working and keep our confidence as high as possible. When things get tough, it is important we keep the mentality of being there for each other. It is a long season."

'How can a referee not look to see if he's okay?'

How can the referee not look at a player after he's fallen down to see if he's okay? Michael Oliver should have stopped the game.

Every time there is a corner kick in the game now and there is a counter attack, someone is on the floor acting like they have a head injury. But that's the rule, the referee has to blow for it so he should have done that yesterday. But, that isn't the only reason Liverpool lost.

'Nothing wrong' with first goal

On whether the build-up to the first goal should have been stopped for a head injury to Alexis Mac Allister.

First and foremost it’s Virgil Van Dijk that elbows Mac Allister, so it’s his own player. If he’s down for 10-15 seconds, the referee has to come back but it’s in the middle of a counter-attacking action. The problem that’s happened with the rules is that everyone goes down now holding his face even if it’s their ankle, so the refs are in a real difficult situation.

There’s nothing wrong with what happened and if any Liverpool fan is saying that’s the reason they lost the game and the goal shouldn’t have stood, watch MOTD later on tonight and I’ll show you why that isn’t the case.

I love Virgil Van Dijk but there’s something going on on that left-hand side between him and Kerkez, because Mbeumo is on the floor and gets up and runs past Van Dijk to score the goal.

Get Involved - should Man United's first goal have stood?

Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

One point of contention at Anfield on Sunday was Manchester United's early opener.

Liverpool were incensed that referee Anthony Taylor didn't stop play when Alexis Mac Allister went down with a head injury inflicted by team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Bryan Mbeumo was then played in behind the Liverpool defence and slotted past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

'The sloppiness in decision making is costing Liverpool'

Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Roy Keane

Former Manchester United midfielder on Sky Sports

Liverpool looked edgy and they are forcing things. There are nerves in Liverpool and that's on the back of three defeats, they are only human and when you lose three games, doubts kick in and you think 'are we going to lose again?'

You still thought Liverpool would get the job done. The sloppiness in decision making is costing Liverpool.

'I think age might have caught up with Salah'

Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Wayne Rooney

Former Man Utd striker on The Wayne Rooney Show

Mohamed Salah has played a lot of games over the past few years. He has been the main man and carried that pressure.

There was talk of him leaving and then he signed a new deal, but it wouldn't surprise me if he does leave the club in the summer.

I've loved watching him, he is a fantastic player, but I think it [age] might've caught up. You don't want to admit it, but it does get you and next thing you're gone.

What's going on with Salah?

Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Mohamed Salah was a key factor in Liverpool's title win last season, scoring 29 goals in 38 Premier League games.

However, the 33-year-old has looked a shadow of his usual self so far this season and struggled to make an impact against United - a side he has scored 16 goals against in 17 previous appearances.

Salah has made 11 appearances for the Reds in all competitions so far this season and scored three times, while providing three assists.

He has found the net just twice from open play.

According to WhoScored, no player has a lower dribble success rate (10.0%) than Mo Salah in the Premier League this season (10+ attempted dribbles).

Liverpool look 'disjointed'

Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Liverpool are struggling defensively and it is costing them points.

After eight league games last term, they had only conceded three goals - none from set-pieces - and had kept five clean sheets.

So far, they have shipped 11 goals, five of which have been from set-plays, and kept two clean sheets.

"It's a little bit disjointed," said ex-Premier League striker Troy Deeney, who agreed with fellow Match of the Day pundit Shay Given that the Reds' summer recruitment was top heavy.

The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper said it is also the role of the forward players to defend because "you defend from the front", but that is difficult when Arne Slot does not yet know his first-choice line-up.

The fragility of Liverpool meant Manchester United's front three of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount could use their pace to their advantage and cause Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate problems.

Still to come...
