But now he has shared his worrying diagnosis in an interview with Swedish outlet Hant.

Thankfully, Hysen was diagnosed with a mild form of the disease, and claims that he is not expected to deteriorate provided he maintains a regimen of medication.

He said: “I take medication 3-4 times a day with tablets. It’s not dangerous, but you have to treat it.”

The former defender, who made 68 appearances for his national side, certainly appears to be taking the news well.

He was in high spirits as he broke his silence on the ordeal.

He said: “I’m not the kind of person who digs deep into things. I have no problem with it, it’s not a big deal.

“I could probably work in a bar now and shake a drink.”

He also explained that his symptoms flare up most when he is nervous, such as in particularly busy areas.

He added: “There are certain situations where you get a little nervous. If there are a lot of people around, I shake a little, but otherwise it’s calm.”

Hysen’s peak came when he won the Football League First Division title with Liverpool in the 1989/90 season.

He was also a three-time domestic champion and two-time Uefa Cup (now the Europa League) winner with his hometown team IFK Goteborg.
