The Mole exclusive; Sydney Roosters interested in Daly Cherry-Evans

0
Sydney Roosters are considering making an audacious approach to Manly's veteran skipper Daly Cherry-Evans next season.

In a move similar to the club's signing of former Storm halfback Cooper Cronk at the end of his career that produced two premierships in 2018-19, the Roosters see DCE as an ideal mentor to their young rebuilding team.

Cherry-Evans is off-contract at Manly at the end of season and is yet to come to terms with the club and at 36, he is the oldest player in the NRL but still playing great football despite having more than 300 games to his name.

Trent Robinson signed veteran playmaker Chad Townsend in a similar role this season, but he is expected to retire at year's end.

Two senior Roosters sources confirmed the club's interest in Cherry-Evans - on the condition of anonymity.

"It's very hush hush at the moment and certainly no approach has been made," one source told Wide World of Sports.

"It may not even happen - but it is being discussed."

The Dolphins - who are based in Redcliffe, where DCE began his career - are also believed to be keen on the State of Origin skipper.

'SMART NEGOTIATING' BEHIND RAIDERS RECRUIT

Matty Nicholson has hit the ground running at the Raiders. Getty

Matty Nicholson had a sensational debut for the Raiders against the Broncos, bagging two tries.

So why did his former English club Warrington let him go? Because of some smart negotiating from Nicholson and his UK manager.

The club knew Nicholson was something special when they saw him playing for Wigan as a teenager - and made a lucrative offer to sign him.

But Nicholson only agreed if the contract included a buy-out clause, which the 21-year-old activated after three seasons at Warrington.

Canberra have had great success with English imports over the years and look to have found another special one in Nicholson, who has already played two Tests for England.

BRANDY'S SON ON CLUB'S RADAR

Manly officials are keeping a close eye on the progress of Beau Alexander - son of the legendary Greg 'Brandy' Alexander - in their junior ranks this season.

The 18-year-old, a running halfback very similar in style to his dad, is in his first year of the SG Ball Cup and looks very sharp.

The youngster is another player in the growing stable of player turned TV personality turned manager Braith Anasta.

'STRONG FAVOURITES' FOR 2026 VEGAS TRIP

No Queensland clubs went to Vegas this year and I'm hearing the Cowboys are strong favourites to make the long trip across the Pacific in 2026.

With a massive following up north and obvious ties to the famous Dallas Cowboys - known in the NFL as 'America's Team' - the Cowboys would be a big hit in the home of the brave and the land of the free.
