Fans left fuming as BBL announcing merger of Melbourne Stars and Renegades

The Stars and the Renegades have merged to create a new BBL team in Victoria, much to the dismay of fans.

Melbourne will now have a new team combined from the two sides.

Their nickname is still to be decided but they will play at the MCG and will wear navy blue, according to SEN.

That means the BBL will likely have just one representative from Victoria moving forward, with Cricket Victoria set to sell their second license.

It is understood the new Melbourne team will take players from the Stars and Renegades, though some will miss out.

Players and staff are reportedly stunned by the development, while fans are also shocked after being caught off guard.

“What a joke. How can your team just die and as a member you’re not even given warning? Full rug pull see ya,” wrote one fan.

Another added: Wow. What a dogs breakfast this has been. Cricket Vic is complicit here. “More concerned with the entertainment piece than the actual performance of both teams. Got schooled by the other states and franchises.”

A third wrote: “How about members? We haven’t had a say at all.”

Another commented: “This is a pretty poor move. Essentially starting a fan base all over again.”

And a fifth remarked: “This is rubbish., the BBL as I knew it has already been destroyed.”

While the news comes as a shock, the announcement does give players and staff enough time to prepare for next season, which commences in December.

However it could be a new look league with one fewer team.
