Kagiso Rabada Breaks Record Of Taking Most Powerplay Wickets In An IPL Season

Rabada has picked up 18 wickets in the first six overs (powerplay) in IPL 2026. The previous record of taking most wickets in a powerplay in an IPL season was held by Shami.

Kagiso Rabada is leading the Gujarat Titans’ fast bowling attack in their IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Tuesday (May 26). In the fixture taking place at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, he bowled the second over of RCB’s innings and picked up Venkatesh Iyer’s wicket on the sixth ball. The left-handed batter from Madhya Pradesh was caught by Shubman Gill in an attempt to play an aerial shot.

The wicket of Venkatesh helped Rabada break the record of taking most wickets in the first six overs (powerplay) in an IPL season.

In the ongoing 2026 edition of the IPL, Rabada has picked up 18 wickets in the powerplay. The previous record of taking the most wickets in a powerplay in an IPL season was in the name of Mohammed Shami.

Shami dismissed 17 opposition batters in the powerplay in the 2023 edition of the IPL for Gujarat Titans. In the list of bowlers with the most wickets in an IPL season in the powerplay, Rabada and Shami are followed by Mitchell Johnson and Trent Boult. Both Johnson and Boult picked up 16 wickets each in the powerplay for the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 and 2020 editions of the IPL.

Most wickets in first six overs in an IPL edition

The wicket of Iyer, who made 19 runs from 7 balls (3 fours, 1 six), also helped Rabada extend his tally of wickets to 25 in 15 matches of IPL 2026. He is now leading the Purple Cap race in IPL 2026.

The 25 wickets for GT in the ongoing season also help Rabada become the first bowler in the world to take 25 or more wickets in three IPL seasons.

Prior to taking 25 wickets in IPL 2026 for GT, Rabada dismissed 25 batters in 12 matches of IPL 2019 for Delhi Capitals and accounted for the dismissal of 30 batters in the 2020 edition. In 2020, he played 17 matches for Delhi Capitals under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership.

The star fast bowler from South Africa is also the first bowler to take 25 wickets in a season for multiple teams.
