Andy Robertson sounds like he's absolutely made his mind up on leaving Liverpool in 2026

You’ve likely heard about Andy Robertson’s recent admission about a contract extension with Liverpool.

The Scot’s contract is up at the end of the season, which will mark nine years as a Red.

During that time, he has achieved all there is to achieve in English football, but has recently been relegated to the bench after the arrival of Milos Kerkez at Liverpool.

Robertson said that he ‘would like’ to stay at Anfield past the end of this term, but if you read between the lines of what he’s telling us, it hints at his future lying elsewhere.

The headlines will be dominated by the answer he gave, but it’s what came after that has convinced some that he might be considering moving on.

He told BBC Sport: “At the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don’t belong at any football club. If you’re happy to sit on the bench, then I don’t think you have the right attitude.

“I think I’ve played well in the games I’ve played this season. Maybe I’ve not played as much as I would have liked, but it’s nothing I’ve been surprised by. Let’s see what happens.”

That doesn’t really sound like someone who would be happy to continue as second choice in his position for another two years.

Who do you think is winning Liverpool’s left-back battle and why?

Robertson is 31, not over the hill by any means. He could start for plenty of sides in the Premier League and not look out of place.

What really raises suspicions of a potential fib is what he said about the club, and particularly his time there.

He remarks: “Nobody can deny what I have given to this club. I’ve given everything day in and day out and put in some performances which I think have been good, and I hope others agree – I’ve won a lot of trophies and had a lot of good days here.

“My relationship with the people higher up in the club has always been excellent since the day I came in. Signing me for £8m and then doing what I have done helps that, which I remind people of all the time!

“The relationship is good and it’s not quite ‘what do they need to show me and what do I need to show them’ as we’ve shown each other more than enough respect over the last eight and a half years. We’ll see what comes.”

It’s a reflective tone from the legendary left-back, and one which suggests Robertson is destined to leave. It’s not that he’s lying about wanting to stay — he would want to if he was going to play.

As a Liverpool fan, I’d love for Robbo to stay, but there’s a chance for him to write a new chapter in his career somewhere where his quality won’t be wasted on the bench.
