Liverpool manager Klopp handed Germany reins

Jurgen Klopp has been confirmed as Germany's new head coach on a four-year contract.

The German Football Association (DFB) announced the news at a press conference this morning at the DFB campus in Frankfurt.

Klopp was the first man the DFB turned to when Julian Nagelsmann resigned after a disappointing World Cup ended with a penalty shoot-out exit to Paraguay in the last 32.

The DFB opened talks with Klopp in New York, where he was working as a television pundit, while the World Cup was still on and on 11 July announced it had reached an agreement in principle. He is understood to have agreed a deal taking him through to the next World Cup in 2030.

Former Liverpool assistants Pep Lijnders, who recently left Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's departure, and Peter Krawietz are expected to be appointed to Klopp’s backroom team, while reports suggest Sven Bender – who played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – will join them.

Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 after nine years, in which he won the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup twice, after saying he was "running out of energy".

After a six-month break the 59-year-old was appointed Red Bull’s head of global soccer, later stating he had no desire to return to club management.

The German Football Association has donated €1 million to Red Bull’s non-profit foundation Wings for Life in order to secure Klopp’s release.
