Gerard Pique defends Barcelona against detractors: ‘That’s why we’re recognised’

Gerard Pique has never been one to shy away from controversy, particularly on social media.

The former Barcelona defender is a keen presence online, and he has once again waded into a debate, this time responding sharply to an online critic who questioned the legitimacy of Barcelona's success.

Pique hits back at a critic

The exchange began when a TikTok user claimed: "There is only one way for Barça to win and we already know it," implying the club rely on refereeing favours.

Pique was quick to shut down the online troll, pointing to Barcelona's footballing quality as the true source of their success.

"Yes, there is only one way for Barça to win and it is playing football very well. That's why we're recognised. We have won many leagues, many Champions Leagues and many trebles playing very good football," he responded (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

The former centre-back then turned the argument on its head, arguing that history actually shows officiating has favoured Real Madrid over the years.

"You have always taken the issue of the referees and I remind you if you want the Champions League final against Juve, the goal of Mijatovic that is illegal.

"Or one of the two finals against Atletico de Madrid, Sergio Ramos' goal, is offside, it is also illegal," he said.

"So refereeing errors there are many but, normally and historically, they have always gone a little more in favour of Real Madrid," he added.

Pique's ideal sendoff

True to form, Pique signed off with his trademark irony.

"For the rest, I hope you're all good. A strong hug and to enjoy the day," he concluded.

Pique's comments come on the back of Barcelona's dream start to the season, with four back to back wins in La Liga.

The Catalans have already assumed the role of league leaders with a slight advantage over Real Madrid, who dropped points against Real Betis.
