NEW DELHI: Former India captain Rohit Sharma , who stepped away from Test cricket and T20Is over the past year, is gearing up for a return to the game by training under former teammate and renowned coach Abhishek Nayar The 38-year-old opener, who plans to continue playing ODIs until the 2027 World Cup, is focusing on regaining match fitness after a break from competitive cricket since the conclusion of IPL 2025 in early June.During his time away, Rohit was spotted at The Oval watching the fifth Test between India and England before heading back to Mumbai to resume training. He has now teamed up with Nayar, with whom he once shared the dressing room for Mumbai.Nayar, a respected coach with experience in both the IPL and the Indian national team setup, has been instrumental in reviving and refining the games of players such as Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul. He previously worked alongside Gautam Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and with the Indian team before parting ways after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was also Rohit’s final Test series.Having always spoken highly of Nayar’s methods, Rohit has now sought his guidance for personal training ahead of his expected comeback.Rohit is likely to return to international action alongside Virat Kohli in the ODI series against Australia in October.Meanwhile, Nayar has taken on fresh coaching assignments, including serving as head coach of the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League. He is also expected to continue his association with KKR in IPL 2026 despite ongoing changes to the coaching staff.
