Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he will not be playing at the upcoming 2024 US Open, saying that he did not feel as if he would be able to give 100%.

Nadal had competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, failing to medal in both the singles or the doubles in what was his final Olympics.

In a statement released on his social media channels, Nadal confirmed that he would instead be playing at the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin this September.

"Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories.

"I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time.

"Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin."

Nadal skipped Wimbledon in order to have the best chance of a medal at the Olympics and hopes were high, especially after being paired with tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz.

“For me personally it was disappointing to not bring back a medal for Spain,” Nadal said to reporters after his doubles exit. “I tried my best in every single minute I was on court but it was not enough.

“If this was the last time, it was an unforgettable feeling and emotion. They gave me the love and support every single second and it's super, super special to feel that.

“I don't know what's going to happen in the future, but if that's the last time I enjoyed it.”

Former Spanish tennis star Alex Corretja had already thrown doubt over Nadal’s participation at the US Open, calling it “almost impossible” given the rapid turnaround.

“For the US Open on a fast court?” Corretja told El Larguero . “You can’t get there without having played on a hard court in New York.

“Is he going to go to Cincinnati in 10 days with the change of surface again? I see it as almost impossible.”

“He has to find a place where he says, this is as far as I want to go and it is worth making that effort, like up to the Laver Cup.”
