United, unsurprisingly, have gone strong, with Senne Lammens in goal, arguably among the safest starters in the team. Ahead of the goalkeeper, the defence sees one change with Diogo Dalot replacing Noussair Mazraoui.

Midfield is unchanged with Kobbie Mainoo partnering Casemiro again, looking to showcase why the pair are so highly regarded together, with Bruno Fernandes ahead of them.

Meanwhile, in attack, Amad has come back in to replace Benjamin Sesko, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both keeping their place. Returning to the forward line that gave Carrick so much success earlier this season.

Manchester United win would be a massive step toward the Champions League

With nine games remaining this season, Manchester United are firmly locked in the race for Champions League football, with a four-team mini league going on, fighting for third to fifth.

United are currently third and with a win against Villa, would take a massive step toward being frontrunners to return to Europe’s top table. Chelsea losing to Newcastle on Saturday means Carrick’s side could go six points clear of the Blues.

It would also see a three-point gap opened to Villa, and potentially extend the gap to Liverpool if Tottenham manages to somehow win at Anfield.

Victory moves United to 54 points, with just 24 left to play for this season, a commanding position that makes the route to securing third or fourth early look easy.

Carrick as tasked with getting Champions League football this season, and achieving that would certainly make him the favourite to be appointed permanent head coach.

But before this confidence can be had, United need to beat the Villans.
