Elena Rybakina is just one win away from surpassing Aryna Sabalenka on the world rankings and claiming that No.1 spot - and she knows it!

Rybakina was asked about her desire to become the sport’s No.1 player in the women’s singles draw after she defeated Naomi Osaka in 66 minutes.

While most opt against speaking to much on their future matches, Rybakina made clear that she is aware how close she is to reaching a new career high.

“Of course I want it,” she said.

“I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t wish this. That is definitely one of my goals.

“If I start well as I did today, I think I have all the chances to (become world No.1). I’ll try my best and hopefully, it will go my way.”

Naomi Osaka’s time at the US Open has officially come to an end for 2026.

The Japanese star could not find the answer to pose any major threat against her world No.2 opponent, Elena Rybakina. She fell to a 6-1, 6-4 defeat in 66 minutes.

While Osaka did show some spirit to send the match into a third set, it was Rybakina’s service game that could not be overlooked by anyone in attendance.

That performance alone has left Australian great Jelena Dokic confident that Ryabkina will be the favourite to take home the title in the US.

Rybakina will face Qinwen Zheng in the quarter-finals.

Six-time grand slam champion Iga Świątek was sent packing earlier this morning at the US Open, falling to a straight-set defeat against Qinwen Zheng.

The Polish superstar could not withhold the remarkable comeback display of her opponent, going from 5-0 up to 7-5 down at the end of the first set.

Zheng, who defeated Swiatek to win gold at the Olympic Games in 2024, continued to dominate in the second set, leaving the crowd in awe.

She eventually went on to win the match 7-5, 6-3.

“I guess to come back from 0-5 is not lucky, that’s all I can say,” Zheng, 23, said.

“I didn’t start the match so well, but little by little I found my rhythm on this centre court because it’s been a long, long time since I’ve played here.

“I haven’t beaten a top-10 player in a while. The more matches I play, the more rhythm I get. I just feel really pumped and ready for my next match.”

Naomi Osaka and Elena Rybakina are currently battling it out for a spot in the semi-finals in the women’s singles draw.

Rybakina, the tournament’s second seed, was too powerful in the first set for Osaka, who was quickly dismissed 6-1 in front of an energetic crowd.

Rybakina’s serve has been the biggest difference between the two athletes. She is now serving to punch back in front in the second set. She trails 2-1.

Wimbledon has confirmed it has no plans to allow an influx of influencers to attend its prestigious event next year in wake of the issues the US Open has faced.

A number of matches have been interrupted over the course of the US Open due to people taking photos using bright lighting in the stands during play, with athletes and chair umpires beginning to call out the disrespectful behaviour.

Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka were among the high-profile athletes to speak on the behaviour of those in the stands, acknowledging that while they do not mind that a new demographic of spectators are coming to watch their matches, all in attendance should learn to follow and respect the sport’s etiquette.

Big screens inside the venue are now showing a similar message to avoid further conflict between influencers capturing content and the matches themselves.

But the events at Flushing Meadows is one Wimbledon organisers do not want.

Wimbledon will refuse any attendees from bringing in ring lights that could be used to disrupt matches. It is also expected no content creators will be given accreditation to the event.

French veteran Adrian Mannarino admitted the disruptions caused by influencers in the crowd as well as the smell of marijuana in New York has seen the US Open turn “into a bit of a zoo”.

“People are allowed to move around in the crowd during points,” he told reporters after losing his doubles match.

“The tournament puts up with it ... I don’t know if it’s the best thing for tennis in general.”
