What is a transfer deal sheet?

The summer window is nearly up: Premier League clubs have until 11pm on Tuesday, September 1, to get their summer transfer business wrapped up. That date draws the curtain on approximately three months of activity in the market, during which clubs have been free to buy, sell and loan players without restriction. Miss that cut-off and there will be a long wait. The next window in which teams can register new signings will not open until Friday, January 1, 2027, when the January transfer window begins.

What a deal sheet is: Think of it as a last-resort lifeline for clubs still scrambling to complete a transfer as the clock runs down. When a buying and selling club have struck an agreement in principle but find themselves buried under a mountain of contracts, financial documents and legal requirements that cannot be processed in time, a deal sheet allows them to formally notify the Premier League that a deal is done, buying themselves precious extra time to get everything over the line. It is a tool designed specifically for crunch-time situations, not a loophole to be used at leisure throughout the day.

Submission time: For a standard 11pm transfer deadline, clubs are strictly forbidden from submitting a deal sheet before 9pm. This two-hour window guarantees the system is only used for deals that genuinely stretch late into the evening, rather than serving as a straightforward extension for transfers that were concluded much earlier in the day.

Extended paperwork deadline: Once a deal sheet has been successfully lodged and ratified by the relevant football authorities, the clubs concerned are afforded an additional block of time to complete the formal transfer process. Specifically, teams are granted a further two hours, pushing their final administrative cut-off to 1am. Should the full registration paperwork fail to be submitted in its entirety by this revised deadline, the transfer will ultimately collapse and remain incomplete until the next registration period becomes available.

Key document requirements: The official deal sheet form demands certain essential details to demonstrate that a legitimate agreement has been reached between the buying and selling clubs. It must include a written statement signed by both parties confirming that negotiations for the transfer or loan of the named player were finalised before the window shut. Furthermore, the sheet must specify the precise financial terms of the deal, setting out both the guaranteed amounts and any conditional payments to be made in pounds sterling.
