Wayne Rooney's son Kai issues heartbreaking update as he says 'life can't get worse'

Wayne Rooney's 15-year-old son Kai has declared 'life can't get worse' after sustaining a devastating injury whilst representing Manchester United's youth setup.

The former England captain, 35, claimed countless honours at Old Trafford and harbours hopes that his eldest lad might emulate his achievements.

Regrettably, the only movement young Kai will be managing in the immediate future will be with the aid of crutches.

Prior to this setback, Kai had been experiencing a meteoric rise through the ranks at his father's former club.

The teenager had recently earned promotion to United's Under-19s squad, competing alongside fellow prospects four years his senior, reports the Mirror.

This elevation was subsequently crowned by a spectacular strike for the Under-18s, where he unleashed a left-footed volley that nestled in the top corner.

Tragically, any upward trajectory he had built must now be rebuilt as he faces an extended spell on the treatment table.

Kai shared a mirror selfie displaying the protective boot encasing his right foot.

Accompanying the image, he penned: "Life can't get worse" complete with a weeping emoji.

It's a message that will resonate with every footballer who has endured a serious injury during their career.

The exact nature of his ailment or the duration it will keep him sidelined remains unknown.

Nevertheless, the despondent tone of his social media post hints it could be considerable time before he dons a United shirt again.

Whilst he has yet to capture public attention in the manner of his legendary father, there has been substantial excitement surrounding Kai's potential. Just like his father, Kai usually takes up a central position for United, but he has also shone in wider areas.

His standout performance came while playing for the Red Devils in the Super Cup NI in Northern Ireland earlier this summer.

Wayne had a similar experience when he was a young and eager prospect at Everton. He proudly watched his son's performances alongside wife Coleen and their youngest sons, Kit and Cass.

When asked about any influence he may have had on Kai's budding football career, the former England captain revealed that he prefers to let Kai play his own game rather than inundating him with advice.

In a previous chat with BBC Sport, Rooney said: "I just let him play. I think they started the competition well, they won 3-0, he scored the penalty and got an assist. So I think he started OK. He just plays and that's all he's done during his time playing.

"I think it's very unfair for anyone to expect him to go and do all kinds. He's just playing, he's a 15-year-old boy playing his football, enjoying it. Of course he gets different attention to a lot of his team-mates but I think he handles that really well.

"He has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a stand off approach. I speak to him, but for me it's all about his mentality and his mindset, to make sure he keeps enjoying it - that's the main thing for me."

Kai has been part of the United academy since he was 11 years old. He joined the Red Devils' youth system in 2020, where his playing style has sparked comparisons to his famous father's performances at Old Trafford.
