Chicharito weighs in on the age-old debate: “Cristiano is Batman and Messi is Superman, because he was born with powers”

For almost two decades, football has revolved around the same discussion: Who is better: Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi? A debate fueled by impossible numbers, Ballon d'Or awards, Champions League titles, records, and two unrepeatable careers that are now living their final chapters at the 2026 World Cup. However, Javier "Chicharito" Hernández believes the question was always framed the wrong way. Mexico's all-time leading scorer took advantage of both legends' presence at his sixth World Cup to offer a different reflection.

It all started with a question from his mother-in-law. "Who is better, Messi or Cristiano?". The former striker’s answer was immediate: "What is it that you admire most?". At that moment, he completely changed the focus of a discussion that has divided football for years. For Chicharito, Messi represents something unrepeatable. "He is the embodiment of pure talent. Watching him play seems natural, as if the laws of physics did not apply to him. He makes the impossible look simple. Clubs build systems around him, and that makes sense because he is a talent that had never existed in history. Messi represents the dream of being born with an extraordinary gift".

"While Messi seems to improvise, Cristiano seems to have trained every move thousands of times. While one conveys calm, the other conveys hunger. While one lets the game come to him, the other goes out to conquer it from the very first minute".'

That is where the reason appears why, he explains, millions of people identify with the Portuguese player. "Many of us were not born being the best. We had to work twice as hard to be able to achieve our dreams. Cristiano Ronaldo represents the one who swims against the current, the one who receives criticism, the one whose achievements are normalized and minimized, and who still keeps moving forward". To sum up that idea, Chicharito resorted to a comparison that quickly went viral. "Messi is Superman and Cristiano Ronaldo is Batman. Superman was born with powers; Batman was not. Batman had to build himself up with discipline, bravery, and courage until he became extraordinary".
